Ontario's MicroFIT & FIT programs are North America's first comprehensive guaranteed pricing structures for renewable electricity production. They offer stable prices under long-term contracts for energy generated from renewable sources.
Very small projects that are 10kW or smaller come under the MicroFIT Program while the FIT Program is for renewable energy projects larger than 10kW in size. These programs have been designed to give homeowners, organisations, businesses, developers and their lenders the confidence needed to undertake projects - and to enable Ontario to build a reliable and sustainable electricity system.
The made-in-Ontario requirement for these programs combines lessons learned from Germany, Spain, Denmark and other jurisdictions with the unique characteristics of Ontario's electricity system.
Once you have entered into a MicroFIT or FIT contract, you will receive a fixed price for the electricity you produce over a 20-year contract period. The prices paid for electricity produced vary according to the location and size of the project. The payments are designed to cover typical capital and operating costs and to provide a reasonable return on your investment over the term of the contract.
By encouraging the development of renewable energy in Ontario, the MicroFIT & FIT Programs will:
- help Ontario phase out coal-fired electricity generation by 2014 - the largest climate change initiative in Canada
- boost economic activity and the development of renewable energy technologies
- create new green industries and jobs.
Feed-in Tariff Prices for Solar Energy Projects in Ontario under the Green Energy Act Initiative are based on the system size and whether the system is mounted on the rooftop or ground. The Price Schedule is as follows:
Rooftop
≤ 10kW: 80.2 ¢/kWh
> 10kW ≤ 250kW: 71.3 ¢/kWh
> 250kW ≤ 500kW: 63.5 ¢/kWh
> 500kW: 53.9 ¢/kWh
Ground mounted
≤ 10kW: 64.2 ¢/kWh
> 10kW ≤ 10MW: 44.3 ¢/kWh
